Hamilton Conservatory for the Arts
The Hamilton Conservatory for the Arts is located in a building with a long history of music education in the city of Hamilton. In 1904, the James St. S. location became the new home of The Hamilton Conservatory of Music formed by C.M. Harris in 1897 while he was acting organist-choirmaster at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church in Hamilton. Previously musical instruction had begun with D.J. O'Brien at the Hamilton Musical Institute as early as 1888. The Institute was renamed the Hamilton College of Music in 1889 and remained in operation until 1899.
The Hamilton Conservatory of Music thrived over the decades receiving a royal charter in 1965 and it was at this time that it was renamed the Royal Hamilton College of Music. In 1980 the college closed it's doors permanently due to financial difficulties.
Thankfully in 1997, music returned to the old building when it reopened as the Hamilton Conservatory for the Arts, providing programs not only in music but in art and theatre as well.
