In this section you will find other interesting aspects of Hamilton's Local History & Archives, including Arts, Commerce & Industry, Crime, Education, Environment, Military, Multiculturalism, Politics, Rare & Unusual, and Sports.  Included (under Military) is our comprehensive selection of information on the War of 1812.

Military in Hamilton

With Hamilton's proximity to the border, military concerns have long been important. British troops were stationed here as early as the 1830's and one of our earliest regiments, the 13th Battalion is still here as the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry. The Battle of Stoney Creek took place in the eastern part of the city in 1814 and is still celebrated every June.

Arts in Hamilton

Crime in Hamilton

The earliest murder documented in the Hamilton area was in 1801 and the murderess became the first woman ever hanged in Ontario. Since then our criminals have kept the local newspapers and authors very busy.

Commerce & Industry in Hamilton

Hamilton has long been associated with business and industry. From the earliest days of the railways there has been an active trade going into and out of the harbour. The steel industry arrived at the turn of the 20th century and other commerce followed.

Education in Hamilton

Central Public School became the first common school opened in Ontario when it opened in May of 1853. Since that time education has been at the forefront of progress in Hamilton.
